Intermediate Drivers License
RCW 46.20.075
An Intermediate license remains until the driver turns 18
years of age.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for an Intermediate License a teen must:
- Be 16 years of age
- Have had a valid instruction permit for six months
- Not committed any traffic offenses in the 6 months
before applying for the license
- Not have had any alcohol or drug offenses once the
permit has been issued
- Passed an approved Driver's Education Course
- Complete a minimum of 50 hours of driving, with 10
hours at night, supervised by a driver age 21 or older who has been licensed
for 3 years or more (Parents will be required to certify the supervised
driving was done)
- Pass the written and driving tests
Instruction permits are issued for one year; a 15 year old
is eligible for an instruction permit if he/she is enrolled in a traffic safety
education course. These forms are given out the first night of class.
Restrictions:
The Intermediate License is issued with the following
restrictions:
No driving between the hours of 1AM and 5AM, except in the
company of a parent, guardian or other driver who is a least 25 years of age
For the first six months of the Intermediate License, or
until age 18, whichever occurs first:
- No passengers under the age of 20 who are not members
of the holder's immediate family
For the remaining period of the Intermediate License:
- The holder may not operate a motor vehicle that is
carrying more than 3 passengers who are under the age of 20 who are not
members of the holder's immediate family
After the 12 month period following the issuance of the
Intermediate License, the driver may drive at any hour without restrictions on
the number of passengers in the vehicle if:
- He or she has not been involved in an automobile
accident or convicted of or found to have committed a traffic offense
described in RCW 46.61 or violated restrictions placed on the Intermediate
License
